Introduction to Windows Server 2012

Exam 70-410:  Installing and configuring Windows Server 2012

Objective in this Chapter:

  1. Objective 1.1: Install Servers
  2. Objective: 1.2: Configure Server
  3. Objective 1.3: Configure local Storage

This objective covers how to:

Plan for a server installation

Plan for server roles

Plan for a server upgrade

Install Server Core

Optimize resource utilization using Features on Demand

Migrate roles from previous versions of Windows Server

What is the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows?

The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer’s processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system.

32-bit versus 64-bit

As the number of bits increases there are two important benefits.

  • More bits mean that data can be processed in larger chunks which also means more accurately.
  • More bits mean our system can point to or address a larger number of locations in physical memory.

32-bit systems were once desired because they could address (point to) 4 Gigabytes (GB) of memory in one go. Some modern applications require more than 4 GB of memory to complete their tasks so 64-bit systems are now becoming more attractive because they can potentially address up to 4 billion times that many locations.

When planning a server deployment. The operating system edition you choose should be based on multiple factors, including the following.

  • The roles you intend the servers to perform
  • The virtualization strategy you intent to implement
  • The licensing strategy you plan to us.

Windows Sever 2012 will only support 64 bit processor.

Type of Windows Server 2012

The datacenter edition is designed for large and powerful servers with up to 64 processors and fault-tolerance features such as hot add processor support. As a result, this edition is available only through the Microsoft Volume Licensing Program and from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), bundled with Server.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard:

The Standard edition includes the full set of Windows Server 2008 features, differing from the datacenter edition only in the number of virtual machine (VM) instances permitted by the license.

  • Windows Server 2012 Essentials:

The essential edition includes nearly all of the features in the standard and datacenter editions, except for server core, Hyper-V and Active Directory Federation Services. The edition is limited to one physical or virtual server instance and a maximum of 25 users.

  • Windows Server 2012 Foundations:

A reduced version of the operating system designed for small business that require only basic server features such as file and print services and application support. The edition includes no virtualizations rights and is limited to 15 users.

Primary Differences among the Windows Server 2012 editions:

Computers running the Windows Server 2012 operating system can perform a wide variety of tasks using both the software included with the product and third-party applications. The activities Windows Server 2012 performs for network clients are known as roles.

Some of the Windows Server 2012 editions include all the these roles, whereas others include only some of them.

Using virtualized server, you can modify your network’s server strategy at will, to accommodate changing workloads and business requirements, or to adapt to unforeseen circumstances.

Be Professional…..

Whenever you get emotional in workplace, your colleagues or boss will say be professional. Even if you are saying the right thing, they will say be in real life. Try to change your thoughts. They can say it easily because they never experienced that situation what you have been through. So what I am trying to say is try to control your emotion in this kind of situation and wait for the right time to answer them. Be prepared before you answer anything in such situation. Just don’t say whatever is coming in your mind.
